The figures show normal kidney histology with most commonly used stains in nephrology. Figure A shows a normal glomerulus using H&E stain. The glomerular capillary loops contain RBCs and are delicate and thin. The tuft of capillaries lie within the Bowman's space. Mesangium (the area outside the glomerular capillaries and surrounded by the glomerular capillaries) is of normal cellularity. In Figure B, PAS stain accentuates basement membrane of the glomerular capillaries, tubular epithelium and also bowman's capsule. Figures C and D use trichrome stain to differentiate areas of smooth muscles from areas where where collagen is present and is widely used in renal diseases to show areas of fibrosis. Jones stain is used widely in nephrology to delineate basement membrane.
